Before previous refugee reform legislation takes full effect, the government has introduced Bill C-31, the Protecting Canada’s Immigration System Act, which seems to roll back the compromises made by the previous minority Parliament. In addition, Bill C-31 incorporates most elements of legislation previously introduced as Bill C-49 and Bill C-4, the Preventing Human Smugglers from Abusing Canada's Immigration System Act.

After months of waiting, on December 22 the Supreme Court of Canada made a unanimous ruling rejecting the Conservative government's bid to create a single federal securities regulator.

One of the four pillars of the government's strategy for enhancing the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of Canadian mining companies was to establish a Centre for Excellence. Hosted by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), the Centre aims to offer a forum where the extractive industry, government, and civil society can obtain timely access to high-quality CSR information and, in so doing, raise the bar for excellence in CSR-related practices.
